Goals For Giving

It was a record year for Goals for Giving, raising more than $83,000 for the NHS Human Services Foundation on Saturday, March 2. More than 250 attendees young and old came out to support the NHS Blues, led by team captains John Scheck and Chris Dunton, as they took on the Flyers Alumni team, led by Brian Propp, NHS Human Services Foundation Board Member and host of Propper Hockey.

Lintons Managed Services Employees. ‘Chuck a Puck’ brought the young ones rink-side to win an autographed hockey stick. But the highlight of the day came when NHS Blues Team Captain Chris Dunton lost his shirt for a good cause against Frankie “The Animal” Bialowas in a classic Broad Street brawl. In the end, the Alumni Team took the win 9-3 in an exciting and entertaining game.

Before the teams took to the ice, many fans stuffed bags for chances to win one of the more than 20 gift baskets provided by Lintons & NHS staff and local businesses.

An after party was hosted at Paddy Whacks Northeast Philadelphia after the game for players and guests. We couldn’t make this happen without the support of our vendors and staff. See More Photos

Going Green In Chester

The Delco Meal Service Center has begun a recycling program that not only benefits the environment but also its employees. Throughout the year, Delco Meal Service Center provides meals to more than 50 clients. Production alone is bound to produce a considerable amount of waste. Delco MSC has turned some of its waste into a rewarding profit share where all of the employees work toward a common goal and reap the benefits together.
Before the current recycling program had been established, 2 local residents spoke with Delco MSC to have permission to pick up the empty wooden pallets from leftover deliveries and recycle them. This act alone helped lower costs by decreasing the frequency of trash removal and reduced cost. When the local residents informed Food Service Director Edie Melvin that they would no longer be able to move the wooden pallets, Edie looked into what they could do on their own in regards to recycling. Thus the recycling program began.
Once the program was established, Production Manager Fred Strange came up with a “Bright Idea” which included recycling the #10 cans used in the food service production. Lisa Duffey, Administrative Assistant, researched a separate recycling facility that would take the cans.
Every time an employee opens a can to use in the daily preparations, that employee rinses it out and places it in a bag on the loading dock. It is then moved to a truck used to transport to the recycling facility. Once the truck is full, drivers on a rotating schedule take the recyclables to the facility to be weighed.
For every recycled pallet, Delco MSC receives $1.50, and for every pound of aluminum (from the cans) $0.22 is received. This may not seem like much but it adds up incredibly fast.
The estimated revenue for 2013 is set to surpass $3500.00, all of which will be used for the employees’ and their Holiday Party.
The entire team at Delco has been working together in this initiative, knowing that with their combined efforts they can all celebrate in the fruits of their labor and help with the environment too! You know what they say, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”

Breakfast Fuels All

Many children do not eat a nutritious breakfast every morning. Families today live busy lives making it difficult to sit down to eat a nutritious breakfast. Offering breakfast at no charge to all students dramatically increases student participation in school breakfast and increases children’s academic performance. Mastery Charter School Pickett Campus is one such school reaping the rewards of implementing a “Universal” breakfast model.

Lintons Managed Services was awarded the food service program contract in 2011, bringing onsite preparation to the school. Lintons team of Director of Operations, Russ Hengst and District Manager, Nancy Hibbard along with Food Service Director, Raven West partnered with John Buttil, Assistant Principal of Operations for Mastery Pickett Campus to implement breakfast FREE to all 730 students in grades 7 to 12.

“They (Lintons) were instrumental in providing information needed to move forward with Universal breakfast. Their knowledge and implementation was essential to the success. Offering their support and ideas we continue to increase our student participation. It makes sense to us with more than 85% of students receiving free or reduced meals.” Mastery Pickett Campus is able to offer a nutritious breakfast at no cost to the entire student body regardless of whether they are Free, Reduced or Paid students. After a trial period during the month of October the program saw a 30% jump in participation. Mastery Pickett breakfast participation rate of 34% is now greater than the National High School average rate of 24%[1].

A mobile steam table and register are placed in a high traffic area allowing students to receive breakfast as they enter the school. They can go to the cafeteria or eat on the way to class encouraging students to enjoy the most important meal of the day. A variety of hot and cold meal options are served meeting all NSLP guidelines.

John continues saying “Teachers and staff are glad all students have the option to get a nutritious breakfast in the morning regardless of whether or not they have turned in their application.” Service time is quicker for students with the mobile unit and no need to collect money. There is also no interference with their academic schedule.

The Application process can be a hindrance but it should never stop us from doing the right thing, John agrees. “Some of the students were direct certified and then others we prod for the first month of school to turn in their applications.” Recent changes to the direct certification process of students have helped in determining a student’s free or reduced eligibility. Under the direct certification process, schools use the electronic information from the County Assistance Office to certify children to receive free or reduced meals.

Schools that offer breakfast free to all students report decreases in discipline and psychological problems, increases in student attentiveness and attendance; and generally improved learning environments. Research shows that children who have school breakfast eat more fruits, drink more milk, and consume a wider variety of foods than those who don’t eat breakfast or have breakfast at home.[2] Well-nourished and ready to focus and learn, Mastery Pickett is preparing their students for success in the classroom.

Chris Dunton and the Lintons Managed Services team were presented with the 2012 Leading the Way Award at the Annual NHS Human Services Foundation Gala. In recognition for their commitment and support to individuals and families faced with challenges.

Through their Community Works Programs, Lintons Managed Services employs 50 men and women with special needs adding a special dynamic to their workforce. The staff at Lintons developed a Culinary Program for students in residential juvenile justice programs so they may develop skills, confidence and independence in preparation of their return to the community.

In 2004 Lintons Managed Services created Goals for Giving hockey tournament. This annual event brings together family, friends and staff to play against the Philadelphia Flyers Alumni and has raised more than $163,000.00 during that time.

Chris Dunton and the Lintons family have always embraced and focused on people’s abilities.
